The Challenge

Net Texts came to Icreon to develop a way for teachers to build digital textbooks using various resources of free educational information. The goal was to develop a way for students and teachers to easily access information without being constricted to the traditional textbook.

The idea sprung after realization that the textbook industry is a billion dollar industry, monopolized by just a few brand names. Net Texts wanted to build a technology platform that enables teachers to distribute educational content across numerous mobile platforms including tablets, smartphones, laptops, and the web.

The Analysis

Icreon built the technology from scratch. From teachers taking surveys, to working designs with actual students, we placed heavy emphasis on making sure the features we were building would actually be used by students and teachers. This guaranteed that the technology platforms were built around the needs and capabilities of Net Texts biggest customers – schools.

Collections of courses that are full of material from elementary schools to collegiate classrooms are combined with beautifully informative charts that show teachers the most shared and most popular course material within the system.
Using .NET technologies, Net Texts was built from the ground up. Over time, the company has continued to add more mobile devices – first a client iPad app, then an Android tablet app, and most recently, a Chrome app. Each app speaks with the backend through a RESTful JSON-based web service. Multiple levels of failover and redundancy are in place via object-level caching through AppFabric.
